Makriyialos

Local Area

Makriyialos (meaning long beach) has a similar ambience and lifestyle to that of a Cornish village some 20 years ago.

It is unpretentious, charming and close to nature with a special ‘feel’.

Makriyialos grew up around the Sun Wing hotel, probably the most successful hotel in all of Crete.

A mountain ridge going West to East across the island shields the South, particularly in the winter from inclement weather.  However travelling from the North to South is difficult, except to Makriyialos.  The town is further protected from rain with its own surrounding mountain range. For these reasons Makriyialos is the most successful tourist village on the South coast.

Makriyialos is only 30 minutes from the working towns of Irapature (on the south coast) and Sitea (on the north coast).

Makriyialos is characterised by some of the best beaches in Crete, secluded coves, crystal clear waters of the mediterranean sea, outstanding and locally produced fruit, vegetables, fish, lamb, chicken, olive oil and wine.  Thanks to many days of sunshine and very little rain, this island produces high specific gravity oil and regularly wins the Gold medal award in international competitions.  All around Makriyialos are thousands and thousands of acres of raw, majestic countryside and mountains.

On the doorstep of Bay View is; Pavolakia Gorge (an excellent walk with scenery and smells from the herbs changing with the seasons); Mona Kapsa Monastery; outstanding restaurants including Dragons Cave (looking back towards Makriyialos and the mountain backdrop and a well deserved reputation for the best lamb in the area) Lastly there is Diaskari Tavern, literally on the waters edge shaded by trees and only seating for around 20.

Secluded coves where you can swim in warm crystal clear waters surrounded by mother nature.  Long beaches where there is hardly another soul, even in the height of summer.
