Royal Cabanas Beach Development
The Royal Cabanas Beach II development is located on the Algarve in the small village of Cabanas, a 25 minute drive from Faro airport which is serviced by many of the budget airlines. Cabanas plays host to many traditional cafes and restaurants located on what will soon be a new promenade due for building and completion by 2008.
Ria Formosa is a five minute walk from The Royal Cabanas Beach II and separates Cabanas from Cabanas island where the beach front can be found. The name Cabanas translates as cabins, the village took this namesake from the many fisherman's cabins that used to exist before 1961 when a great storm swept all the cabins from the island. To reach the Cabanas island beach front it is necessary to take an aqua-taxi to cross the Ria (river), in the summer season the price is half a euro per person for the 3 minute trip.
At present there are several new developments in the area, the local people commented on the growth in tourism being steady and suggest this is mainly due to the 10 year local planning regulations. Every 10 years local government carries out a planning review. Some local landowners are then granted permission to build on land that was previously used for agricultural purposes, but the local government restricts this land release. Once the current developments are complete any further development is said to cease until the next review in 2013. Cabanas is located within the Portuguese Ria Formosa national park, no settlement within the national park can build developments above 3 stories high so the Cabanas skyline remains preserved.
Winters are very mild, all the photographic images you see were taken in December 2005. Whilst it is a little too cool to sunbath, generally the winter temperature allows one to sit outside wearing short sleeves in comfort. The picturesque town of Tavira is a five minute drive from the Cabanas Beach development. Here there are a variety of shops, restaurants and cafes. There is also a castle with views over the town.
During the high season the still waters of Ria Formosa are used for water skiing and windsurfing. Three nearby Golf courses are open all year round.Cacela Velha is an example of another small towns in the area, coastal paths make it possible to explore the local area moving from one village to the next. Waterfalls are located in the nearby mountains.
